What is B12 Injections?

Vitamin B12 injections replenish vitamin B12, an essential nutrient, and mitigate the symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency, bypassing the complex absorption process that oral supplements entail.

Better nerve and muscle function

Vitamin B12 and folate are essential for producing methionine and S-adenosylmethionine (SAM). These methylation reactions are required to form the fatty myelin sheath around nerve cells that speeds up nerve conduction. They also play an important role in the production of brain messengers known as neurotransmitters.

Lower risk of anemia

Vitamin B12 is required to produce healthy red blood cells. Vitamin B12 deficiency can result in malformed and large red blood cells, known as megaloblastic anemia. These large red blood cells cannot move efficiently from the bone marrow to the bloodstream, resulting in anemia. Anemia can lead to weakness and fatigue.

Clearer cognitive function

High-dose vitamin B12 supplementation can lower high homocysteine levels in older adults both with and without cognitive impairment. After reviewing 21 clinical trials, researchers concluded that vitamin B supplements may delay cognitive impairment associated with aging. However, vitamin B supplements had no effect on information processing speed, episodic memory, or executive function. More research is needed to understand the relationship between homocysteine levels, vitamin B12 and cognitive function.

Improved mood

Vitamin B12 supplements may improve mood and ease depressive symptoms. In one study, approximately one in every three people with depression had elevated homocysteine levels. Supplementing with vitamin B12 lowers homocysteine levels and may improve mood, particularly in response to stress. In a review of studies, researchers found that while vitamin B12 supplementation did not improve depressive symptoms, low vitamin B12 levels were linked to an increased risk of developing depression.

Supports bone health

Vitamin B12 deficiency can increase bone fracture risk. When 1982 people who follow a vegan diet were tracked for 17.6 years and compared to non-vegetarians, they had a 43% increased risk of fractures, including hip fractures.

Frequently Asked Questions about B12 Injection
Vitamin B12 injections can replenish Vitamin B12 in people who are deficient. Low Vitamin B12 levels are more common in people over the age of 65, those with gastrointestinal problems, strict vegetarians, and those who have had bariatric surgery. There is some evidence that supplemental Vitamin B12 can improve mood even in people without a true Vitamin B12 deficiency. Restoring Vitamin B12 levels can provide the following benefits:
  • Improved memory
  • Improved mood
  • More energy
  • Decrease in weakness and fatigue
  • Improve the health of skin, hair, and nails
  • Improved sleep
  • May improve ringing in the ears
The effects of a Vitamin B12 injection can be felt within about 48 to 72 hours. People who are not deficient in Vitamin B12 are not likely to notice any benefits. How fast Vitamin B12 is metabolized in the body will also vary by person but is expected to be less than one week.
Vitamin B12 affects numerous bodily functions, including the production of red blood cells and brain functions. Symptoms of low Vitamin B12 include:
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle weakness
  • Nausea
  • Trouble with balance
  • Irritability
  • Weight loss
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands and feet
  • Diarrhea
  • Smooth and tender tongue
  • Fast heart rate

Risk factors for Vitamin B12 deficiency include:

  • Using antacids long-term
  • Having pernicious anemia
  • Having inflammatory bowel disease
  • Having autoimmune disorders such as type 1 diabetes
  • Taking high doses of folic acid
  • Having lower stomach acid levels due to aging
  • Taking metformin for more than four months
  • Being vegan or vegetarian
  • Using alcohol excessively
  • Having a family history of Vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Having part of your stomach or intestines removed
  • Being older
If you are Vitamin B12-deficient, a Vitamin B12 injection is expected to have effects within 48 to 72 hours. Depending on your metabolism and the severity of your Vitamin B12 deficiency, you may notice improvements in your energy levels in as little as two to three days, but it may take weeks of treatment to feel the full effects.

Vitamin B12 deficiency and insufficiency are relatively common because:

Some medications slow Vitamin B12 absorption or increase Vitamin B12 use.
Certain medication conditions make it harder for the body to absorb Vitamin B12
of limited dietary intake, especially in people who are vegan or vegetarian.

Impeccable Quality And Affordable Prices

Our partner compounding pharmacies work with a registered and certified third-party lab to run quality control checks for every lot of compounded medications prescribed and delivered to our patients. These labs follow guidelines to ensure compounded medication safety and quality.

Endotoxicity

This test checks for endotoxins (bacterial remnants that can cause health issues) in pharmaceutical products, ensuring they are free from contamination. Endotoxin limits depend on how the medication is given.

pH Test

This test measures the pH (acidity or alkalinity) of a product, which impacts its stability, solubility, and potency. The pH must stay within a specific range to ensure the endotoxin test is valid.

Sterility Test

This test ensures that sterile compounded medications are free from microbial contamination, including bacteria and fungi, reducing the risk of infections.

Potency Test

This test measures the strength or concentration of an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) over time, ensuring the medication maintains its potency until its beyond-use date when used with stability testing.
